A Goth Thread?

22
I'm sorry I've only made a few posts, but I'm terribly shy and right now I'm feeling a little outgoing, so I decided to make up a thread.

Do you long for Japanese-inspired goth looks that don't mean lolita or visual kei? Do you love all the dark romanticism, but none of the Western ideals that go along with it, like enjoying Slipknot and Hot Topic? Love goth fashion that doesn't equal wearing twenty pounds of black lipstick and eyeshadow?

I personally am a fan of minimalist, dark looks, and I'm searching out inspiration. To get this thread started, the adorable goth-gal that is Nonaka Iwata!
Minimalist photos from my personal collection of inspirations:
Are there any favourite brands that you enjoy? Any bloggers or famous people you'd like to bring to attention?

I like the looks you posted. Dark colours but not all the over-the-top bling that I usually see with "goth". Like you said, minimalist.... awesome!

Some of the stuff reminds me of the outfits from men's brands like Julius. I don't know if you would consider that similar though...

Goth too often has that horrible bling; it drives me insane.

What I've seen of Julius I absolutely adore. I also like bohemian and gypsy-influenced darkness, but stuff like that is very hard to find.

I do like the clothing posted in that, thank you. :D

I find that in my search for goth fashion that is actually applicable for everyday life, Japan is the best place to look for inspiration. I really like the idea of choi-goth, it's a lovely way to put a gothic twist on casual style. Most Western styles are too over the top or just silly-looking to wear everyday.

hi :)
Awesome thread/topic idea! I love the pictures you posted, that last guy Jun from golden bomber - he is one of my top inspirations for a vhost style, I have always loved this ideas of "goth" also rather than sterotypical aesthetics or western kind, like you said anything minimalist ,dark - or mostly monochromatic and lots of layering+drape kinda stuff with black and grey scale and textural diffrence in layering - a totally beautiful style! . Also when it is very Unisex. It is quite tricky to say if is it goth or so or if it has a term like "visual kei" but ~ i guess it would be goth ,
I have always called it reaper-esque to myself XP , if we do mean the same thing here some images that i liked to get what i mean and speak for me rather because i tend to type-ramble ->
I have tons more ,street snaps to brand editorial, if you like it i can post more just say.

I agree that there are lots of jbrand or label that has this aesthetic, I love Julius too
also Rick Owens
and Rad hourani - my favourite designer for this aesthetic or atleast , his whole design style is my favourite of all.

I find Ann Demeulemeester a good designer for this aesthetic too.

For me, style is about spirit and attitude. My style is not about “age,” it’s about having a little fun, opting for a bit of glamour, and not taking yourself so seriously.

Great topic for sure. Nonoka (not Nonaka) is one of my favourite gal models for sure. I don't like BPN so much, I feel like it only ever seems to look good in styled shoots, but sister-brand Gadget Grow is very cool. You might also want to check out Buffalo Bobs Noir.

And yeah, if you've got cash to burn, Ann D and Julius are both interesting examples to go for.

This sort of thing = my life.

I'm going to second Brad's recommendation of Gadget Grow, which is possibly my favorite japanese brand. I like how they don't just stick to blacks and grays, using a lot of earth tones and some splashes of color. They also do a lot of really soft textures/materials, a little bit like Damir Doma, I guess. And the quality is normally much better than anything by BPN.

Buffalo Bobs has been showing some Rick Owens influences lately, and all of onii-kei seems to be shifting to the blacker side of the spectrum.

If you're going for a simpler look, don't be afraid to be brand-agnostic and pick out individual items from anywhere, without much concern for overall brand aesthetic. I've found that Comme Ça Ism, PPFM, GLADNEWS and even Uniqlo all have decent dark staples on occasion.

If you want goth goth, there's Kenzo-A's Rituals. He was the designer for Stigmata, sister brand to Sexy Dynamite London, before they went under. Stigmata items are a little hard to find these days, but they're also in the same "legit goth" category. Na+H has some nice, clean-lined goth, and Beauty:Beast has some good leather bags (though the latest version of their 5-pocket model appears to be sold out).

If money's not an issue then the sky's the limit. Rick Owens, Ann D, Yohji Yamamoto, Raf Simons, Lad Musician, Julius, Damir Doma, Gareth Pugh, and Alexandre Plokhov's new line.

(Btw: was not aware of Nonaka Iwata. ♥)

“This,” I thought, “is moronic.”

It is kinda my life too, as I above all style love this kind most, so wow thanks for sharing all those brand, designer and labels ! :)
Gadget Grow looks so comfortable and Ryutaro models it really perfectly.

Gareth Pugh is amazing desinger too, he inspired me to create my own blazer-jacket influenced by his designs.
I don't have much of an income, so that is what i do - design and create for myself ,or tries to find this sort of thing as best i can off brand and around my local cities,or cheaper brand or lucky ebay finds. But i am going to invest alittle bigger to progress my style to much better very soon i hope, and look into all of those brand you said~
I nearly won a bid for a Rick Owens jacket on ebay resently, so nearly! :(

distressed leathers ♥

I'm surprised no one has linked Alice Auaa yet.
Also, to add on, I feel like my style is leaning towards what's being discussed in this thread a lot more than the cliche sort of visual kei style.
